Do we need this?

Senate filibuster.

It’s become nothing more than a procedure for the minority to obstruct legislation.

What is the argument, in today’s society, for such a minority obstruction?

Of course we do. Everything in the Senate should require 60 votes to pass.

It is better for we the people when legislation, judges, cabinet members require 60 votes.

So you’re against reconciliation procedures.

Why is 60 better than a simple majority?

But your declaration of what’s best for the collective sounds pretty progressive.

I don’t hold much hope for you unfortunately.

There is some wisdom in requiring a little more than 50.1% to pass a law.

I wouldn't mind simple majority laws if we could get back to actually following the Constitution. In particular, the 10th Ammendment. You wanna get your socialist freak on, fine. Do it at the state or local level. I am still trying to figure out why one of the commie states hasn't went to single payer healfcare yet, since it is so freaking awesome. There's nothing stopping you.

So the neo-cons believe it is a good idea without offering any rationale.

How unusual that they can’t substantiate their position.

The GQP gave up on the Constitution when they began instituting abortion restrictions. The GOP gave up on the Constitution when they refused to abide by Article II, Section II of the Constitution. Conservatives gave up on the the Constitutions when they started treating gays-lesbians as non-citizens unworthy of the protections afforded to straight people.

Save your constitutional piety for someone who hasn't seen how little the GOP cares about the Constitution.

Yes against reconciliation procedures.

As for why 60 is better than 51 it generally means one party can't pass legislation or approve judges that lean too far to their ideology. Legislation that gets at least some support from the minority party is generally better than legislation passed on party lines. Further we the people are better off with less legislation coming out of DC than we are with more. 60 makes it that much more difficult for them to legislate to us.
