Fosbury Flop

Post by Softball Bat »

A revolutionary high jump technique popularized by Dick Fosbury, who used the method to win the gold medal in the 1968 Olympics.

Fosbury Flop became an iconic sports term.

The Immaculate Reception - Franco broke the Raiders' heart in this 1972 AFC Playoff Game (which popart watched on the tube)

Sky Hook - The virtually unstoppable shot developed by the great K.A. Jabbar. You could only hope to contain him

The Miracle on Ice - The U.S. win over Russia in the 1980 Olympics. I believe in miracles, YES!

Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain - Saying created by Gerald Hern (Boston Post) to describe Boston’s starting pitching

The Catch - Dwight Clark reception in the back of the end zone to lift the '9ers over the Cowboys in the 1981 NFC Title Game

Beast Mode - Marshawn Lynch (Cal)

No Mas - The proud R. Duran craters in humiliating fashion v. S.R. Leonard in their 1980 battle at the Superdome in N.O.

The Ali Shuffle - Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee!

You cannot be serious! - Johnny Mac freak out

The Play - Cal over Stanford in 1982 - band on the field!

Head Slap - Deacon Jones

PileDriver - Nick Bockwinkle :)

"The Catch" to me would be Willie Mays amazing feat in the 1951 WS, deep in centerfield on Vic Wetrz's long fly ball.

Absolutely. But being, since early childhood, a Giants and 49ers fan, I've always known May's catch (and throw, which was a big part of it) to be "The Wertz Catch," which differentiates it from the The (other) Catch.

Best all-time NBA nickname -

Chocolate Thunder

Funny, I did a search on Darryl Dawkins's original nickname and couldn't find it on any English language website. It does still show up on some Italian and Spanish websites.

I guess "Baby Gorilla" is now considered too racist to even mention.

The GOAT.... David Thompson.
I had to privilege of seeing "Skywalker" up close during 78 - 79.

The Clippers' first season in San Diego a couple of my friends were close to the front of the line for season tickets and bought four seats at center court in the second or third row behind the press table, and shared them with their friends. I must have seen a couple of dozen games during those two seasons. The Clips had a decent, and very interesting, team at the time.

World B Free
Randy Smith
Freeman Williams
Swen Nater
Sidney "Stone Hands" Wicks
Kermit "Sucker Punch" Washington
and they added Bill Walton in 79

The best part was seeing the NBA's great players of the time come through town.

Dr J
Kareem
AD
Silk Wilkes
Ice Man
etc

But the most impressive, seriously, was Thompson. "Skywalker" was an apt nickname. He appeared to take off at about the free throw line and "literally" climb steps to the hoop. Most impressive when you're only 50 feet or so away.

Skip to about 2:06 here to see what I mean.

You've got to respect the way that guy handles his business. Just rolls in with his lube and plucks off a few tissues. He's like, "Can anyone guess what time it is?"

Like a boss. Rack that dude!
