It has been explained many time, including in the link that Jsc posted just above, that the primary benefit of a mask is that it is shown to have effectiveness in keeping the asymptomatic virus carrier who is wearing one, from spreading the virus to others.

We don't wear a mask to protect ourself, but to keep from infecting others, in the event that we are a carrier of the virus.
