Over 38,000 new cases in the U.S. yesterday.

Yikes!

Haven't seen a number this high since 4/24.

And as you can see, since the middle of June the trend has been -----> UP, not down.

It does appear that America is now experiencing a new "wave" of the virus.

Hang in there, folks.

You're going to be SHUT DOWN again soon.

Yep.

No, we won't. Not that it will be an issue. There isn't going to be another shutdown if for no other reason than the fact that we can't afford another shutdown.

I spoke with a colleague who works in our Italy office yesterday. She said people there are acting like there was never a virus.

Most people are not wearing masks. Bars and restaurants are back open full tilt. Based on the usual garbage being spewed here and everywhere, I expected a very different image being painted of non-Americans cooperating perfectly and like well-filed sheep. This doesn’t add up. :?

95% of people here in S. Korea are wearing masks in public.

Most businesses are open, but it is most definitely not "normal" here.

There is a "yellow dust" issue here that people have dealt with for a long time.
Very fine dust floating in that originates in China.

Primarily for this reason, even prior to Covid, people would sometimes wear masks on days when the dust is bad.
On an average day prior to Covid, maybe 5% of the people would be wearing a mask.
And when the dust is bad, over 50% of people are wearing masks.

In America, prior to Covid, almost nobody ever wore a mask.
So yes, there has been a bit of a "mask culture" here, which I think has made it easier for Koreans to capitulate to wearing a mask.

No such mask culture exists in America - and it seems bizarre to most Americans to be wearing a mask.
I understand it.

American states have been slowly reopening their economies in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, but thousands of businesses are still closed — many of them for good.

Too bad all those hundreds of millions of dollars in contracts to Trump crony businesses that didn't exist a month ago for masks they didn't have, those small businesses that just went 86 could have used that money. Oh well, that's Trump Socialism for you.

This is still baffling:

https://www.koin.com/news/health/corona ... sk-policy/
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Lincoln County has backtracked on its decision to exempt people of color from its mandatory face mask policy, citing a “shocking” backlash of “horrifically racist commentary” from the community.

Lincoln County issued the directive on face coverings on June 17 and included several exceptions, including for people with certain medical conditions, children under 12 and “people of color who have heightened concerns about racial profiling and harassment due to wearing face coverings in public.”

The directive also said the mandate is self-executed and that no one is allowed to intimidate or harass individuals who do not adhere to it.

The decision to exempt people of color, which was made in an effort to ease worries over racial profiling, gained national attention.
There was so much wrong with the initial reasoning -- including the dual unintended consequences of both setting in stone that Covid19 transmissions are not really a public health concern, and making it public policy to encourage blacks to catch it.

The racism was in the implementation more than the backlash.

I want to read the unredacted minutes of the meeting which spawned this. Where to find?

Too small to bail. The oligarchy at work.

However -- what exactly were those businesses which closed? There's a difference between a business depending upon people coming inside closing its physical location but still providing services -- and an outright closure.

The marketwatch site says it's restaurants, retail and fitness centers, because can't comply with covid19 guidelines. Those are businesses which can't 'work from home'. They have more challenges changing their business model than an insurance agency. It can be done, but not over Zoom.

Why would Los Angeles, in a state which bragged about its lack of cases, have more closures than NYC, by the way?

AS I WRITE THIS, THE NASDAQ 100 INDEX IS UP 30% OVER THE PAST YEAR WHILE CONTINUED JOBLESS CLAIMS HAVE SOARED TO RECORD HIGHS AS THE RESULT OF A PANDEMIC.

Image

IT’S LIKE NOTHING I’VE EVER SEEN (OR ANYONE ELSE HAS EVER SEEN, FOR THAT MATTER).

TYPICALLY, WHEN RECESSION HITS AND UNEMPLOYMENT RISES DRAMATICALLY IT’S NOT GOOD FOR THE STOCK MARKET AS BOTH REVENUES AND EARNINGS TAKE A HIT. IN THE PAST, THE TRENDS IN CONTINUED JOBLESS CLAIMS AND STOCKS HAD A NEGATIVE CORRELATION, MEANING THAT WHEN THE FORMER ROSE THE LATTER FELL. OVER THE PAST FEW MONTHS, HOWEVER, WE HAVE SEEN BOTH RISE STRONGLY IN TANDEM.

AND THERE MAY BE NO BETTER REPRESENTATION OF THE MASSIVE GULF BETWEEN THE STOCK MARKET AND THE ECONOMY RIGHT NOW.

Posting charts to show us how wrong your predictions were?

And both lines in that first chart show a drop and then recovery. Just goes to show the economy was quite strong until Rona and if it were to go away tomorrow we would recover very quickly.

Further, your trickle up comment is misguided and disingenuous. Workers pensions and retirement funds make up a good portion of stock holdings. More than 50% of Americans is own stocks. Why continue to claim it only helps the wealthy?

Learn to read. I didn't say it would. I was just pointing out how that was what was pulling the economy down. Despite the Rona flu, we still added nearly 5 million jobs in June. Of course those are mostly recalling furloughed workers, but still.

We know you want the economy to crash and for workers to suffer, but without the Rona flu, this economy would be roaring along.

You are deluded.

As was posted on this board numerous times...

We were borrowing a trillion dollars a year.
Interest rates were kept under 2% (and many times near 0%) for a decade.
Labor force participation was at historic lows.
Banks were being fed 10s of billions of dollars in a repo scam for many months prior to the virus, just to keep them going.

The economy was a farce prior to the virus.

You should really stop listening to Don's crazy bullshit.

Good call.

Job-loss notices are coming, United says

United Airlines, its plans for a business recovery upended by a surge in coronavirus cases, has said tens of thousands of its employees could be furloughed or laid off starting Oct. 1.

The airline discussed potential cuts during “town hall” meetings with employees Monday and Tuesday. Executives leading the meetings shared details of bookings falling sharply as the pandemic accelerated in the U.S. during June.

The carrier has authorization for $5 billion in grants or loans under the federal CARES Act, but the measure’s protections against job reductions expire Sept. 30. United already has announced its intention to cut 3,400 of its managers, about 30% of its total, a move expected to take a chunk out of its Chicago headquarters.

Just a week ago, United said an increase in bookings would allow it to triple its August schedule, bringing it to 40% of its level from a year ago. But in its presentation to employees, United said cancellations have risen again as state and local governments, including Chicago, issue quarantine orders covering travelers from coronavirus hot spots...

Most airlines will start layoffs at some point after Oct 1, if things don’t change dramatically. American and Delta have been aggressive with early retirements and voluntary furloughs.

But with demand at somewhere around 35% of normal, airlines are way over staffed.

Yes, time for strict lockdowns for all these Trump ball licking states that didn't take Covid 19 seriously the first time around. No home depot, no retail, just food, Target, and home. Maybe this time around these assholes will stay home, start wearing masks and start taking Covid 19 seriously so we can crush this nonsense and move on with our lives.
