The average NFL game has 21 points scored in 60 minutes of play. That is 3 TDs or 7 FGs or a combination thereof. It averages to a scoring play at best every 8 minutes or so.

Most summer sports are played in meadows, I've never felt meadows are something to be concerned about.
Meadows aren't threatening, they haven't got an evil leader.
Meadows didn't knock down the world trade centres. I've never felt the need to cover myself in armour, put on a helmet, shoulder pads to play sport in a meadow.
Australians play full contact sport in meadows and don't need to don full body armour,.

I've been trying to figure out why I do not care for soccer. Sure---it is a demanding sport physically in spite of the theatrics that happen any time someone gets "hurt"; I'll give soccer fan that much. But the real question is why do most Americans like myself consider the sport to be boring/lame or what have you.
I think there are multiple factors for this:
#1--Americans are sport's statistics freaks. Baseball has many:batting averages, pitching ERA's, stolen bases, strikeouts, etc..
Football (our sport) has Yards rushing, QB stats, sacks, receptions, run backs, etc. There is nothing like that for soccer fan.
#2-- Our major sports have events that happen within the game that are crowd pleasers: home runs, double plays, amazing spin dunk moves, long break away runs, etc. That make you want to watch closely so you don't miss them. Soccer just has one--GOAL, not even a crushing body check into the boards like hockey or a good old fashioned NHL glove dropping brawl.

The scoreline isn't always an accurate measurement of the game itself. With less scoring comes more release when it does go in, there's more work put into it and the rewards are greater. It's like having a choice between three Big Macs or a single steak tenderloin.
