PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Trail Blazers have offered former No. 1 draft pick Greg Oden an $8.8 million qualifying offer to stay in Portland.
82 games played in 3 seasons. What the fuck does he have on Portland ownership for them to continue this madness?

They should thank their lucky stars they didn't pick Kevin Durant.

While that number is technically correct, the revised number would be 82 games in 4 seasons.

BTW-according to every media hack and beat reporter here, they've asked numerous NBA GMs what would happen if the Blazers didn't extend the QO to Oden. Their answer has universally been "then 29 NBA GMs would be blowing up Oden's agent's phone."

Matter of fact, no one familiar with the business side of NBA basketball thinks it's a good idea to give up on Oden... not one.

If it wasn't foir the lockout, they probably would have offered him a multi-year deal, and if/when any other team makes a run at him (they'd be lining up, if it weren't for the lockout), they may well try for a multi-year deal that's well short of the max.

Frankly, we're in it this deep, might as well try to get something out of the deal. IF dude can put together a few 60+ game seasons, it's time to hang some banners in the rafters.

How many legit blow-up-the-paint centers are in the NBA right now?

Howard

Bynum?

and...

no one?

Because throwing money at a #1 pick center that can't ever stay healthy long enough to do much is pretty dumb... right Rockets fans?

Besides, I'll always love Greggy if for no other reason than sitting in the arena, watching a playoff game, and Greg sent Mutumbo off to the rest-home in the most befitting fashion -- blew up Dickheady Mutumbo while Mutumbo was doing what he made a career of -- kneehunting (when he wasn't too busy trying to break eyesockets), and trying to end a young player's career. He picked on the wrong guy.

Although he's been getting some serious kid-gloves treatment/rehab this time around. Not even talk of him playing until November, at the earliest. Trying to get that fucker healed 100% before getting him out there.

And remember -- we are the Blazers. Unless the new CBA fucks us with a hard-cap, $9 mil falls out of Paully's ashtray when he gets out of the car. Kinda changes the dynamic when ownership has no desire to turn a profit, and merely break even. While the dude is a dick, that attitude towards the team doesn't suck.

And if it does only become a 1 year deal, then either A) he's wonderful tradebait, or B) makes for a boatload of expring contracts after the 2012 season, when everyone and their brother becomes a FA.

If he plays, we win, if he stays a perpetual gimp, we win. Win/win, and the correct business decision, with all the goofy rules (that are subject to a big shakeup in the coming weeks).
